Obituary of Eileen L. Gilbert

Eileen L. (Miller) Gilbert, age 93, of Standish, Michigan and formerly of Monroe and Dundee, passed away at her home on Friday morning, December 4, 2015. Eileen was born in Raisinville, Michigan January 18, 1922 the daughter of Edward and Sylvia (Gruschow) Miller. She married Owen S. Gilbert January 17, 1942 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church on Ida-Maybee Road.. Sadly he passed away on April 1, 1965. She graduated from Dundee High School in 1940. While in high school, she was in the chorus, on the debate team and a member of the National Honor Society. She graduated from Warner Cosmetology School in Toledo, OH in 1941.She then worked at abeauty shop in Flat Rock, before marrying her high school sweetheart, Owen Sidney Gilbert, on January 17, 1942 at St. Matthews Lutheran Churchon Ida-Maybee Road. In their 23 years of marriage they celebrated the births of their six children. Sadly Sidney passed away on April 1, 1965. Eileen ws an avid walker, walking miles per day for most of her life and usually at quite a brisk pace! She enjoyed sewing and quilting, cooking and baking and playing cards. She often invented her own recipes and card games. She worked for many years as a seamstress in Milan and she was quite talented. She worked for the Independent Dairy in Dundee. She also enjoyed playing piano and singing. She contributed both gifts to her church for many years. She is a former member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church and a current member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Ida. Eileen is survived by her sons Sidney (the late Mary Jo) Gilbert of Dundee; Paul Gilbert and Robert Gilbert both of Standish; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; brother Lynn (Nancy) Miller of Dundee; sisters Evelyn Phillips of Berlin Hts., Ohio, Juanita (Chuck) Ruehs of Dundee and Alice Harris of Monroe; daughter in law Rita Gilbert of Petersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, sons Gary E.Gilbert and Gordon R. Gilbert and daughter Sylvia A. Steele. Friends may call Monday from 2 – 8 PM at the Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee (734-529-3156) She will lie in state from 12 noon until 1 PM services, December 8, 2015 at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Ted Kerr III, pastor of the church. Interment will be in St. Matthew Cemetery in Raisinville Township. Memorials may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
