Gary Bruce Dygert was born in Lansing, Michigan on July 31, 1941. He was the son of the late Charles Dygert and the late Lonetta (Bunker) Dygert. Gary attended Lansing Community College where he obtained his Associate's Degree in Business. Gary supported his family as an Accountant. For several years he was employed by Life Skills Abilities Connections. His true passion was for community service. Gary was extremely active in several communities having a passion for volunteering, and devoting his life on service to others. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Lansing and Monroe and served as President of the Southgate Club from 1996-1997 and 2001-2002. Gary was a recipient of the Kiwanis International George F. Hixson Fellow Award in 2001 and the Lieutenant Governor Award for 1998-1999. He previously had served as President of the Salvation Army and past member of the Advisory Board. Gary received an Outstanding Service Award in September 2011 due to his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. Gary always had a positive attitude and an infectious smile. Family was precious to him and he looked forward to occasions he could spend with them, especially his grandchildren. Gary thrived on going to the lake enjoying boating and water skiing. He was an avid Michigan State fan and long-time usher for their football games. On occasion, Gary enjoyed a quiet game of golf. Gary Bruce Dygert, age 71 of Monroe passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by his step-mother: Burdell Dygert; two sisters: Ardith (Daryl) Drury and Lois (Dennis) Ide ; two brothers: Howard (Gene) Dygert, Ray (Porge) Dygert; and a brother-in-law: Arthur Berry. To cherish his memory he leaves two children: Paul (Tari) Dygert of Northville and Lisa Dygert of East Lansing; one sister: Marilyn Berry of Elk rapids; and two grandchildren: Hannah and Jensen Dygert. Cremation has taken place. Friends may gather from 4:00pm until a Celebration of His Life at 6:00pm on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. Pastor Kenneth Spain, Associate Pastor of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Kiwanis Club of Monroe.
