Obituary of Thomas W. Harwick

Thomas W. Harwick, age 83, of Dundee, Michigan, died Monday , March 4, 2013 at 5:25 PM at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe. He was born January 30, 1930 in Petersburg, Michigan , the son of Benjamin and Irene (Woodbury) Harwick. He married Mary L. Siler March 5, 1951 at Angola, Indiana. He grew up in Petersburg and joined the United States Army serving a Cpl. From 1951-1953. He was employed at the Tecumseh Products Company and retired in 1991. Tom served his community in many ways. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in and is now a member of the Dundee United Methodist Church. He served on the Dundee Volunteer Fire Department and is a Past Fire Chief. He had worked for Powell Hardware Store and was a funeral assistant at the Buhl Funeral Home and Ambulance Service in Dundee. He and his wife opened their home and hearts to over 60 foster children over the years. Tom was also the longest serving member of the Dundee Village zoning board of appeals. He is survived by his wife Mary; son Don (Rebecca) Harwick of North Edwards, CA; daughters Kathy (David) Foster of Loveland, Colorado, Tammy (Jay) Hemdal of Dundee and Sherry Simpkins also of Dundee; a sister Marjorie Blome of Bissfield; grandchildren Katherine O’Brien, Sarah White, Thomas Harwick, Jessica and Andrew Foster, Nicole Simpkins and John T. Hemdal; great-grandchildren Nicholas Breen, Kai White, Kaden White, Stella White and Stone Foster; also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother George Harwick and sister Mary Gilson.. Friends may call on Friday from 4 PM until 6 PM service time at the Dundee United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Douglas Olsen, pastor of the church. In accordance with Tom’s wishes, cremation has been held.
