Gertrude B. Sontag, age 95 of Monroe, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at her home. She was born in Riga, Michigan October 13, 1917 the daughter of Jacob and Clara (Keller) Rohrbach. She married Merland W. (Skip) Sontag April 22, 1935 at St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1985 and were married for 66 years. Merland passed away November 9, 2001. She retired from Monroe Public Schools as a bus driver in 1977. Following retirement she and her husband moved north to Grayling and Mecosta but moved back to Monroe after his passing. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Monroe; loved hunting and fishing with her husband and family; playing cards; watching the Detroit Tigers baseball games and following her grandkids sporting events. She also loved to cook and bake. Gertrude’s survivors include her daughter JoAnn (Allen) Mieden of Carleton; daughter in law Barbara Sontag of Monroe; 8 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; one sister Alice Stasco of Tupelo, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her husband Merland, her son Lavern, her daughter Barbara Eshenroder, grandsons Gregory and Paul and 7 siblings. Friends may call on Friday, August 30, 2013 from 1 – 8 PM at the Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee (734-529-3156). Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Saturday at 10:00 A.M. Officiating will be Rev. Dennis Buxs, pastor of Christ Lutheran church in Monroe and her grandson Rev. Dan Bowman. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Dundee. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 225 E.
