Obituary of Kathryn “Katy” J. (Kelley) (Teague) McIntyre
Kathryn Jean McIntyre “Katy”, age 91, passed from this world peacefully in her sleep while at home on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Born September 11, 1927 in Carleton, Michigan to James Augustis Kelley and Viola Delores (Theisen) Kelley. She graduated from St. Mary Academy, Monroe, in 1944. She married Hall C. Teague and together they had five children. He preceded her in death in 1974. Later she married Richard McIntyre who also preceded her in death.
A woman ahead of her time, Katy took the civil service exam in the mid-60s to be able to earn a wage equal to that of men, at the U.S. Post Office in Monroe. Not known to many, but Katy was the very first woman employed at the local post office and 30+ years later retired from there. No small feat! She loaded heavy sacks onto trucks, walked the routes without benefit of a truck, carrying an over-sized satchel, sometimes in snow wearing only tennis shoes, because she had no notice to wear boots. In those days they really wanted to dissuade women from working in a man's profession. Ultimately, she became their fastest mail sorter and front desk clerk - always going above and beyond to help people.
After retiring, she bought and renovated the former Bob's Bar, to have her own Irish pub, "Kelley's Bar" in Monroe, which she ran and managed from 1990-2003, renowned for the Kelley burger and the best hot chili.
Katy had the most beautiful rose garden, roses of every kind, color, and fragrance. She also grew enormous sweet smelling, white moon flowers that surrounded her deck. Always an avid reader, even a subscriber to The Wall Street Journal as of late. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Monroe.
Her greatest pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, the last one born on Feb. 12, 2019 and she dearly loved spending time with all of them.
Katy, mom, was one in a million! Always with a twinkle in her eye, a fun or compelling story to tell, and looking much younger than her years. She was truly a beautiful woman inside and out. She carried herself with pride and dignity, yet not overly serious, stiff or stoic – and she will be remembered for her wry smile, wink, and ever-present dry sense of humor. Her sharp as tack, agile and clever mind was her trademark. Katy was loving, loyal, and had our backs, no matter what. She was our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and mother in-law.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son: Randall “Randy” James Teague in 1971; as well as her husbands: Hall C. Teague and Richard McIntyre: her parents: three brothers; Kenneth Kelley, James Kelley, Bryce Kelley: and daughter-in-law; Cheryl Teague in 2018. She is survived by four loving children: Linda Salanick of Monroe, Barbara Teague of Monroe, David (Teresa) Teague of Monroe, and Wayne Teague of Lighthouse Point, Florida; three grandchildren: Michael Salanick of Los Angeles, California, Terra (Jared) Giarmo of Monroe, and Katelyn (Tim) Harm of Monroe: three great grandchildren; Lainey Hess, Joseph Harm and Ari Giarmo, all of Monroe: two sisters, Mrs. Joyce (Karl) Close of Monroe, Mrs. Marion (John) Landowski of Bellville, as well as numerous friends and relatives.
Katy leaves us too soon and with saddened hearts, and we miss her already - and will always hold in our hearts and minds those beautiful memories! Now you have lots of time with our Randy, take good care of each other! We forever love you, Mom
