Thomas L. Smith was born in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania on March 18, 1925. He was the son of the late J. Morris Smith and the late Mary (Ross) Smith. Thomas served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. Tom married the love of his life, the former Wanda Reiter on November 6, 1948 at Bethel Baptist Church in Sykesville, Pennsylvania. The couple relocated to Michigan in 1952, residing in Detroit, Livonia, West Bloomfield, and then Williamston. Tom supported his family as a resident engineer for Ford Motor Company. He also worked part-time in real estate for a period of time. After retirement, the couple spent their winters in Venice, Florida and their summers in Williamston, Michigan until 2009 when they moved to Creekside Village in Monroe. Tom enjoyed socializing with family and friends, and new acquaintances did not remain strangers for long. He had a talent for turning any event into an interesting and often funny story. He enjoyed golfing, playing the organ, and singing in the Barber Shop Chorus. Above all, Tom loved his Lord. He was a faithful church member who gave of his time and energy as a volunteer including Sunday School Superintendent at Alpha Baptist Church in Livonia where he and Wanda were members a majority of their years together. Tom was a loving, caring father and husband. When Wanda's health declined, he lovingly and respectfully took on the role of caretaker until her passing on June 3, 2012. Thomas L. Smith, age 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. In addition to his parents; his passing was preceded by his beloved wife: Wanda; and four brothers: James, Clifford, Dale, and Clyde. He will be missed and his memory will forever be cherished by three children: Sharon (Patrick) Mullin of Monroe and Jan (Rev. Dean) Poellet of Williamston, Thomas K. (Susan) Smith of Deland, Florida; six grandchildren, along with their spouses; one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania, Saturday, September 8th at 2 PM, with inurnment immediately following at Reynoldsville Cemetery. Merkle Funeral Service (734) 384-5185 has been entrusted with his arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Monroe.
