Alvin Thomas Jewell, age 72, of Monroe passed from this world on Saturday morning June 14, 2008. He was received in the Loving Arms of his Heavenly Father. His family was at his side. Tom was born on October 20, 1935 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was the son of Mabel Lee Wallace and was adopted by his stepfather Clarence "Happy" Huggins. Tom served his country honorably from November 25, 1952 until September 18, 1956 as a member of the United States Navy. He acquired the National Defense Service Medal. Tom married the love of his life Donna Jean Worrell on April 9, 1955 in Monroe, Michigan. He had worked for several years at the Ford Motor Company, but for more than twenty-five years he was employed at Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Plant. At Fermi he worked as a laborer for Local 465 retiring in 2001. Tom's favorite pastime was baseball and he was an avid Detroit Tiger fan. Many family trips were made to Comerica Park to cheer on the home team. He particularly enjoyed this interaction with his family and his beloved grandchildren. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of fifty-three years: Donna; six adoring children: Lena (Ronald) Laprad of Erie, Michigan; Mabel (Rickie) Ellison of Lambertville, Michigan; Thomas 'Happy' Jewell; Sarah Olson; Jerry K. Jewell and Hershel (Dorella) Jewell all of Monroe; twenty beloved grandchildren; and fourteen very special great grandchildren. His passing was preceded by his parents. Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of His Life at 1:00pm on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Faith Baptist Church, 6245 Whiteford Center Road, Lambertville, Michigan. The Rev. Ed Young pastor of the church will officiate. A meal will be served for food and fellowship immediately following the celebration. Tom in order to help others has donated his body to the Anatomical Donations Program of the University of Michigan Medical School. Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street, Frenchtown Township, (734) 384-5185 was entrusted with his arrangements. A private scattering of his cremains will take place at a later date in Tennessee. In lieu of flowers; for those desiring memorial donations are suggested to the family.
