JANE ALICE KAUFMAN March 13, 1942 - October 2, 2010 Jane Alice Kaufman, who had been a resident of the Alice Lorraine Care Center since 2008, passed away after a long struggle with diabetes and renal failure. She was well cared for by everyone at Alice Lorraine and, most recently, by the Mercy-Memorial Hospice caregivers. Jane was born in Manhattan to Bennett and Ruth (Berkman) Kaufman. After graduating from high school, she completed some nursing school before beginning work as a bookkeeper for a large New York City property management company. She retired in 2004. Aside from her work, she led a quiet life, lovingly caring for her mother who died in 1991. She enjoyed the company of her dear cats and created beautiful crewel works and other works of embroidery; she sewed her own clothes and also was an excellent cook and baker. Jane was a loving aunt to her three nephews, Josh, Dan, and Ingo Kaufman. Jane moved to Monroe in 2005 to be near her family, making her home at River Park Plaza. She is survived by brothers Marty (Hedi) Kaufman and Raymond (Janet Nothstine) Kaufman, as well as her nephews and their families: Joshua and fiancée Kathleen Klemm, Daniel and Jennifer, and Ingo and Claire and grandnephew Louis. Cremation has taken place and a private service was held by the family. Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185 was entrusted with her arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Monroe County or Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe.
