Karen "Daphne" McManaway was born July 2, 1941 in Monroe. She was the daughter of Harry and Coella (Hopson) McManaway. She attended Monroe High School. In 1959 Karen married Robert Weiss at the First Baptist Church.
Robert was a member of the military and Karen moved to stay near her husband. She enjoyed the travel and lived for a time in Hawaii and North Carolina.
Karen was employed nearly thirty years by K-Mart. Over the years she performed many tasks; serving in positions such as cashier, stock person, and even Department Manager. After Karen's retirement in 2006 she often joined with members of the Kmart Retirees group for lunch.
"Daphne" as her friends and family knew her was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was a people person and especially loved the time she spent with her grandchildren. Karen was passionate about gardening and kept a beautiful yard with the flowers that she nurtured. She was a giving person. She made beautiful afghans which she gifted to those she loved and donated to those in need including newborns at Mercy Memorial Hospital and Habitat for Humanity. She spent many hours assembling puzzles.
Karen shared memories with her family including her mother: Coella (Hopson) McManaway of LaFollette, TN; daughter: Rochelle Weiss of Newport; son: Scott Weiss of Monroe; sister: Sharon Russell of Speedwell, TN; brothers: Monte (Penny) McManaway of Florence, SC and Clark McManaway of Monroe; a sister-in-law: Jean McManaway of Monroe; seven grandchildren: Sean , Christi, and Ashley Weiss, Cindy Maloche, Sara Goltowski, Kevin and Timothy T.J. Knuckles; five great grandchildren: Hailey and Caitlyn Weiss, Bryan Tackett, Baylee Goltowski, and Brooke McCoy, various nieces and nephews including Justin McManaway.
Karen "Daphne" Weiss, age 67 passed away Thursday, April 16 at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Her passing was preceded by her father, a son: Johnnie Weiss; a sister: Jennifer Smith; a brother: Zachary McManaway; a brother-in-law: Jim Russell, nephew: Dale Smith, three infant children, and an infant grandson: William Maloche Jr.
Friends may gather from 2:00-8:00pm, Friday, April 17, 2009 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185 where a Celebration of Her Life will take place Saturday at 11:00am. The Rev. Gary Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.
