Alicia Marie Draper was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on December 6, 1966, to the union of Donald and Karen (Moroz) Draper. Following her graduation from high school, Alicia continued her education, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in music education. During her time at music school, she met the love of her life, John Upton and the two were married on July 28, 1990.

Alicia dedicated more than thirty years to nurturing the musical talents of students in the Akron-Fairgrove and Milan School Districts both in Michigan. Her passion for music was evident in her cultivating the band program for Milan Schools. One of Alicia's proudest achievements was the development of the drumline, which she built from the ground up. With her expert leadership and innovative approach, she instilled a sense of discipline, teamwork, and creativity in her students, helping them form bonds that would last a lifetime. The drumline became a cornerstone of school spirit, energizing pep rallies, football games, and community parades, and reflecting Alicia’s belief in the power of music to bring people together.

Alicia’s journey in music education didn’t cease with the marching band and drumline. She also led concert and jazz bands, a testament to her visionary spirit and deep love for the art. She worked tirelessly to create an inclusive and vibrant environment, welcoming students that she taught from middle school and all the way through high school, in the world of music. Her enthusiasm and guidance inspired countless young musicians to discover their potential and develop their skills.

Beyond her remarkable career, Alicia was known for her love of cooking and her sharp, dry sense of humor, which brought joy and laughter to friends and family alike. She was a vibrant spirit who enjoyed training for marathons, demonstrating the same tenacity in her personal life as she did in her professional endeavors.

Alicia was married for thirty-four wonderful years to her husband, John.  Her home was always filled with love and laughter, complemented by their beloved cats, affectionately known as the "feline brain trust." During her time in hospice, her three devoted cats took turns keeping vigil by her side, exemplifying the deep bond they shared.
