Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Robert Charley Hammer was born in Sylvania, Ohio on September 1, 1970. He was one of two children born from the union of Robert Clyde Hammer and Barbara Lucille (Denniss) Hammer. Chip, as he became commonly known, graduated from Ida High School with the class of 1988.  He then obtained his associate degree from Monroe County Community College. Chip was gainfully employed as a journeyman electrician and spent his entire career as a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 8 out of Toledo.

At a young age, Chip was ingrained with a deep love for the outdoors. As he got older, his love translated into numerous trips spent hunting with his father—who was also his best friend—and his cousin, Mike. Beyond the hunt, Chip and his wife: Carrie found tranquility bass fishing on the lake, absorbing the quiet sounds of nature while enjoying each other’s company with their beagle, Brave.

Chip built a home in Johannesburg where he and Carrie planned to retire next year, intending to enjoy their golden years in the peaceful environs they cherished. A life-long sports enthusiast, Chip’s vigor for athletics was unmistakable as he was actively involved in playing on the softball and hockey teams for Local 8, and several other teams over the years. He was a diehard University of Michigan fan, with his loyalty particularly strong towards the football and hockey teams, never missing a chance to cheer for his heroes like Bo Schembechler and then Jim Harbaugh.

During summer, Chip’s competitive spirit flourished on the greens as he participated in at least two golf leagues, always striving to perfect his swing. His winters were spent rooting for the Detroit Red Wings, as hockey held a special place in his heart. Others enjoyed being around him. Whether he was at a hockey game, hunting or at work, Chip always had fun.

Robert Charley Hammer, age 53, of Temperance, passed away on Thursday; May 9, 2024. His passing was preceded by all four of his grandparents.
