Obituary of Curtis Lee Dafney Sr.
Curtis Lee Dafney was born on August 15, 1938, in Lewisville, Arkansas. He was one of thirteen children born from the union of Jack and Mary (Davis) Dafney. In his younger years, one of Curtis's passions was basketball. Curtis played the game with grace and skill which helped nurture the dreams and aspirations of the younger generation. His skills on the court at that time could be compared to the great Michael Jordan of today.
Curtis married Georgia in 1958. The couple was blessed with seven children. To provide for his family, Curtis was employed for fifty years by the Smith Greenhouse as a truck driver. A skilled handyman, Curtis was a master of many trades. He had an innate ability to fix bikes, lawnmowers, plumbing, and even air conditioning units. His expertise was widely recognized, and whenever something needed repair, Curtis was always there to save the day. His humble and selfless nature shone brightly through his actions, consistently helping, and supporting those in need.
Among his many talents, Curtis had a special love for fixing cars. In fact, he was the first person in his family to purchase a vehicle, a sky-blue Mustang that became a symbol of his passion for mechanics. His yard, filled with various automobiles in different stages of repair, often prompted jokes that it resembled a used car lot. Curtis's dedication to his craft and his unwavering commitment to helping others brought life back to many broken-down vehicles. He was also an avid motorcyclist, and he embraced the thrill of the open road on his beloved Harley Davidson.
In addition to his practical skills and hobbies, Curtis had a great sense of humor. His jokes and lighthearted nature brought joy and laughter to any gathering. Despite his independent spirit, he cherished the connections he formed within the community, expressing his love and care through his genuine acts of kindness. For the past decade he daily volunteered at the Oaks of Righteousness Christian Ministries Center filling in wherever he could. He was often seen around town driving the church bus.
Curtis Lee Dafney, Sr., age 85, of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday; September 11, 2023. His passing was preceded by his parents; his beloved spouse: Georgia; six brothers: Will Dafney, Henry Dafney, Aron Dafney, Ellis Dafney, Howard Dafney, and Joe Dafney; and four sisters: Susie Anderson, Florida Kitchens, Sophia Briggs, and Katie Richards. His departure has left an immense void, as he served as not just a grandfather to his own blood, but to all the children in his neighborhood. Curtis was a dutiful brother, always looking out for his family and going above and beyond to lend a helping hand to those around him.
To cherish his memory, he leaves his children: Curtis (Michelle) Dafney, Jr., Deborah Nash, Jacqueline A. Dafney, Rosie Dafney-Ayler, Tanika Dafney-Ejimadu, and Davidle Dafney; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; a sister: Kathleen Dafney; a brother: Arthur Dafney; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Friends may gather on Friday September 22, 2023, from 11:00pm until 1:00pm at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185. A Homegoing Celebration of His Life will take place at 1:00pm also at Merkle’s. A procession to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle will follow for interment.
