Obituary of Lymon Jett, Sr.

Lymon Jett, Sr. was born on October 4, 1929, in Barbour County, Alabama. He was the son of the late James Henry Jett and the late Willie Beatrice Vickers-Freeman (William Freeman, Sr).  At a very young age, he united with St. Luke Baptist Church in Baker Hill, Alabama.  At the age of 19, Lymon moved to Monroe, Michigan and started working as a car transporter for Quality Motors. Soon thereafter he began a career with Ford Motor Company that lasted 30.1 years until he retired as a painter in 1982.

 

Lymon married Leola Hoskins on July 19, 1952, this union stood the test of time lasting seventy-one years. Lymon was only educated through the sixth grade, but he was proud to have obtained his GED once moving to Monroe.  He enjoyed bowling, swimming, gardening, landscaping, and woodwork. One of his greatest accomplishments was making wooden time clocks and to carve wooden images of all 50 States. In the 1960’s, he served briefly as an auxiliary police officer for the City of Monroe.

 

Lymon Jett Sr. departed this earthly life on September 10, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. His passing was preceded by three brothers: J. C. Jett, James (Lessie) Jett, and Shelly (Delores) Jett; two sisters: Willie Dell (Jessie Lee) Kyles and Mary Ann (Sam) Maddox; and a brother-in-law: Robert Johns.

 

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife: Leola Jett; six children: Claudette Hoskins, Lymon (Delnita) Jett Jr., Robert (Kathleen) Jett, Richard (Linda Faye) Jett, Peggy (Bennie) Oliphant, Janet (Keith) Jett; a brother: William Freeman, Jr. of Clayton, Alabama; a sister: Irene Johns of Tampa Florida; nineteen grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

Friends may gather from 12:00pm until 1:00pm on Monday; September 18, 2023, at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070.  A Homegoing Celebration of His Life will take place at 1:00pm with his son-in-law:  Bishop Bennie Oliphant DMin officiating.  Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for burial.
