Grandma was the sweetest angel I have ever met in all of my 33 years of life. She would send me a card every single birthday with money in it and a handwritten note that included how much she loved me and she was proud of me. She did this for all of her kids and grandkids. She made sure that we all got together on every birthday and holiday and she took photos at every family gathering and added the photos to her own famous custom scrap books that she kept all of the amazing memories in over the years. Grandma’s house was more like the neighborhoods safe house where anyone could stop in and get fed, get a hug, get some laughs, grab something to drink and get back on to your day. Grandma always made sure that the entire family was in Sunday school and church. She would welcome the spirit in every morning by singing around the house with her beautiful angelic voice. Before church I remember countless mornings, smelling the bacon, playing with the family dog, reading the comics out of the newspaper, and watching cartoons on the small tv on the kitchen table. Grandma lead by example going to church every single Sunday and by singing in the choir. She would visit people all over the community and love on them and somehow kept up with so many different people and showed each and every one of them love. Grandma showed me what it meant to be a loving wife! She always cared for my grandad by cooking for him, making sure he ate, making sure he was happy, and making sure he was by her side in Church. Grandma was a great bowler, a great chess player, and she was the best at jigsaw puzzles. Her mom was also a great competitor of mine in checkers. I will never forget my beautiful grandmother and how she was effortlessly discipled to my entire family and our entire community and every person that she met. She was the glue of the family, the heartbeat of the family, and she was the example of obedience to God for the family. We all desire to follow in her footsteps, and continue obeying God, coming together as a family and loving on one another creating timeless memories, and eating food while sharing memories. I will make sure that the family keeps God first in honor of grandma, I will ensure that the family continues to come together in honor of grandma, and I will continue to create generation wealth so that we can always afford to come together and enjoy one another’s company. Thank you grandma for fighting the good fight and for loving on me for all 33 years of my life and for being that Godly example for me. Thank you for birthing my best friend, my mentor and my mother. I love you so much grandma, see you sooner than I know I’m sure. ❤️

I’ve been fortunate to have spent a lot of time with my grandmother—on top of holidays, when I was younger I went to church on Sundays with her, and even stayed with her a few times throughout my life.
What I’ll always remember about my grandmother is her singing in the kitchen and cooking, how she always had candy stashes and a puzzle going in the house, and her strong and graceful presence in my life.
‘Truly grateful for the time I was able to spend with her.

My grandmother is truly the matriarch of our family. Her mother, Mama Hoskins, always said “Be ready if you don’t go” and I love how she lived by those words. She always had her nails painted, hair curled, and a cute outfit. Even if she wasn’t leaving the house, she stayed ready. As I reflect on her life, I truly admire her as a woman. She’s set a great example of the woman I wish to be and I pray I make her proud.
Grandma, thank you for creating a safe space for all your kids and grandkids. The way you’ve been able to love and nurture each one of us is remarkable. I love you and appreciate you beyond words.

Dear Mother Johnson,
You were an incredible woman who was always so nice to me.
I will never forget how you would pull me aside from time to time before or after church, push a 20 dollar bill in my hand, and give me a wink — which was always your way of saying, “keep going”.
You would write me letters when I was in Mexico asking me how it was, were there other black people, if I felt lonely or if I had clean water to drink. Simply put, thank you so much for seeing me when many others didn’t. You were one of the first people outside of my immediate family who invested in the potential you saw in me. I am a strong, super curious, competent and confident, black man because I had supporters like you in my life.
I will treasure your memory forever. Thank you for being our angle on earth. Rest in eternal peace. ❤️
Love,
Chris Murphy
