Obituary of Thomas Gustav Krug
Thomas Gustav Krug was born on August 20, 1939, in Monroe, Michigan. He was one of five children born to the union of Woodrow and Jessie (Wood) Krug. Tom attended Monroe High School, graduating with the class of 1958.
On June 13, 1959, at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Monroe, Tom married the love of his life; the former Sharron Ann Schmelz. The couple was blessed with four children. Tom supported his family by working for more than forty-six years at the La-Z-Boy Furniture Company. During his employment, Tom held many positions at the company from hauling and planing the trees used to manufacture the furniture, to building all the foot rests the company produced. His last position prior to retirement was in maintenance. In addition, Tom worked for Oerther Brothers Trucking and Excavating repairing tires during his spare time.
Tom was a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church; a true man of God with a strong faith and a passion for his family. He had a deep love for children. From 1973 to 1983 he acted as a foster parent to many boys and girls. He coached girls’ basketball for thirty-three years at Holy Ghost Lutheran School. Tom and Sharron enjoyed when they were able to play cards with their close friends. They also enjoyed spending time at Tom’s cabin, which he and the family built in Gladwin, Michigan.
Thomas Gustav Krug, age 83 of Monroe, Michigan passed away peacefully on Monday; February 13, 2023, at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. He was surrounded by his loving family. His passing was preceded by his parents: Woodrow and Jessie Krug; a brother: Ricky Krug; a sister: Helena (Peter) Soncrant; and a grandchild: Jesse.
To cherish his memory Thomas leaves a loving wife of sixty-three years: Sharron Ann Krug of Monroe; a son: Thomas A. (Cindy) Krug of Monroe; three daughters: DeeGee Marie (Dave) Vroman of Mayville, Michigan; Christine (Glen Wandt) of LaSalle, Michigan, and Kelly Ann Doty of Dayton, Ohio; a sister: Kathleen (Marvin) Nowitzke of Monroe; a brother: Robert (Viola) Krug of Carleton, Michigan; six grandchildren: Christopher, DaKota, David, Woodrow, Jason and Delanie; and five great grandchildren: Jesse, Riley, Catherine, Ava, and Olivia.
Friends may gather on Friday; February 17, 2023, from 1:00pm until 8:00pm at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185. He will lie in state from 10:00am until a Funeral Service Celebrating His Life at 11:00am on Saturday; February 18, 2023, at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, 3563 Heiss Road, Monroe, Michigan. Reverend Lee Cullen pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery.
