Obituary of Joseph Lester Pelkey

Joseph Lester Pelkey was born on November 29, 1948, in Monroe, Michigan. He was one of seven children born to the union of Argil and Marie (Beaudrie) Pelkey. Joseph attended Jefferson High School in Monroe, graduating with the class of 1967.   Following high school, Joseph was drafted in the United States Army where he would serve his country honorably and be a proud Vietnam vet.

For almost thirty years, Joseph provided for his family working as an engine repairman for the Chrysler Corporation in Trenton, Michigan.  He was a proud member of the United Autoworkers Union Local 372.

Joseph loved to spend time outdoors.   His favorite place in the world was in Northern Michigan at the family cabin near Lewiston.   He enjoyed hunting and fishing with snowmobiling being another favorite pastime.   Joseph was a member of the Michigan Snowmobiling Association. When he wasn’t up north spending time, he enjoyed fishing on Lake Erie for his favorite catch; walleye and perch. 

Joseph was a well-rounded card player, playing poker and euchre often with many of his friends.  His true passion in life was spending time with his family. In his younger years he loved competing in the demolition derby.

Joseph Lester Pelkey, age 74 of Monroe, Michigan passed away peacefully at his home on Friday; February 10, 2023.   Surrounded by his loving family, he was under the care of Elara Caring Hospice.  His passing was preceded by his parents: Argil and Marie Pelkey and three brothers: James, Daniel, and Dennis Pelkey.

To cherish his memory, he leaves a son: Chad (Katie) Pelkey of Carleton, Michigan; a daughter: Sara Pelkey of Newport, Michigan; one sister: Cheryl Withrow of Monroe; two brothers: Kenneth Pelkey of South Carolina and Gary Pelkey from North Carolina; two grandsons: Ryan and Lucas Pelkey of Carleton; and ex-wife: Pamela McLachlin Pelkey.

No public services are planned, and a private family service will be held later. Joseph’s care has been entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185.  Cremation has taken place through the on-site crematory, Covenant Cremation of Erie, Michigan.
