Obituary of Floyd George Martin
Floyd George Martin was born on February 25, 1928, at home in Monroe, Michigan. He was the eldest of four sons born to the union of Floyd A. and Antionette (Stiener) Martin. Floyd attended Monroe High School. While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He spent some of the last days of the war walking the foothills in search of enemy soldiers.
On June 25, 1955, Floyd wed the love of his life, the former Anna Salenbien, whom he met at a dance. The couple were joined in marriage at St. Michael Catholic Church in Monroe. A loving husband, Floyd cherished his wife of sixty-eight years. He truly adored her and devoted himself to her care. His family, Anna along with their six children, were the center of his world. For forty years, Floyd was employed as the head storekeeper at Consumers Power Plant, retiring in 1990.
Throughout his life, Floyd exemplified dedication and service, not only to his country, his family, and his employer, but also to various organizations including Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, and the Belgian American Club. He was highly esteemed amongst the membership of VFW Post 3925 in Erie, Michigan where he held the distinction of being its eldest member. Floyd and his wife were also active parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Erie.
Floyd found joy in the simple pleasures of life, from dancing polkas with his beloved wife to the chore of chopping wood. He had a deep appreciation for the great outdoors and enjoyed partaking in deer, pheasant, squirrel, and rabbit hunting as well as fishing in the serene landscapes of their family cabin in Harrison, Michigan and at Anna’s aunt’s cabin in Tawas, Michigan. Floyd’s adventurous spirit also led him to explore the world beyond his home state. He embarked on several cruises, including a memorable trip to Alaska, and bus and train tours across the country, including several to Branson, Missouri, and an enchanting visit to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Floyd George Martin, age 96, of Erie, passed away peacefully at home on Monday; March 18, 2024. In addition to his parents, his passing was preceded by a son: Mark Martin; a daughter: Lisa Martin; a granddaughter: Clara Martin; and three brothers: Thomas Martin, William Martin, and Jesse Martin.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife: Anna; four children: Floyd T. (Sally) Martin III, Greg (Terri) Martin, Mike Martin (Debra Kramer), and Colleen (Jerry) Henry; nine grandchildren: Floyd IV, Ben, Dan, Michael Jr., Devin, Marcia, Trisha, Katie, and Jeremy; sixteen great grandchildren plus a baby boy expected soon; a great-great granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; and his feline friend: “Blackie”, an eighteen-year-old cat whom Floyd had a strong affection for.
Friends may gather on Thursday; March 21, 2024 from 3:00pm until 8:00pm at Merkle Funeral Service, Erie; 9156 Summit Street, Erie, Michigan 48133 (734) 317-7199 with a rosary led by members of the Knights of Columbus will be recited at 7:00pm. Floyd will lie in state from 10:00am until the Mass of Resurrection at 11:00am on Friday; March 22, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 2214 Manhattan Street, Erie, Michigan 48133. A procession to St. Joseph Cemetery, Erie will follow with military honors provided under the auspices of the Erie V.F.W. Post 3925.
