Betty Jo Gajos

Obituary of Betty Jo Gajos

Please share a memory of Betty Jo to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Betty Jo Turpen was born on September 5, 1923, in Sullivan, Indiana.   She was the youngest of nine children born from the union of Arista and Lelia (Purcell) Turpen. Betty Jo would attend and graduate from Sullivan High School with the class of 1941. Betty Jo married Dale Cunningham in 1943 and they would remain married until Dale’s passing in 1977. This loving couple would be blessed with the birth of three sons. Betty Jo relished in her responsibilities of being a stay-at-home mom to her three boys, however, she did entertain full time positions at Sarns and Kmart for a period of time.

Betty Jo liked to stay active and fit.   Literally, quick on her feet, she was an avid clogger, and excelled at this form of dance.   Her talent and good health allowed her to take part in this activity well into her mid-eighties.  Betty Jo could often be seen, at least twice a week, until she turned ninety, knocking down pins at the bowling alley.   Even after ninety, she was an active participant in water aerobics daily.

Betty Jo loved to travel, no matter where, she always enjoyed exploring new places.  For those times when she wanted interaction with others yet a chance to relax, she would visit the local hall to play BINGO with her friends.

Betty Jo Gajos, age 98, of Monroe passed away at Beaumont Hospital in Trenton at 6:40pm on Sunday; February 13, 2022.   Her passing was preceded by her parents; her first husband:  Dale Cunningham; and her second husband:  Steve Gajos in 2009 and grandson Jason Cunningham in 1995.

To cherish her memory, Betty Jo leaves her three children: Randall (Florence) Cunningham, Donn (Marlene) Cunningham, and Tom (Evelyn) Cunningham; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.   The family would like to acknowledge Betty’s granddaughter: Carrie Williams, who provided exceptional care for her the past three years.
