Obituary of Judith Shoemaker Hicks

Please share a memory of Judith to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Judy Shoemaker Hicks, former Tecumseh resident, died at her home in Monroe, Michigan after a brief battle with cancer.  Surrounded by her loving family, she passed peacefully into the loving arms of her heavenly Father on January 18, 2022.   Judy was born in Hudson, Michigan to Duane and Virginia (Willett) Shoemaker and attended Morenci High School, graduating with the class of 1966.  She would continue her education at Sienna Heights University in Adrian, Michigan where she received her bachelor’s degree.

On January 18, 1969, Judy married the love of her life, Gary Hicks. To this union the couple would be blessed with son, Joshua and daughter, Molly.  Judy and Gary were serial entrepreneurs, successfully owning and operating multiple businesses including Sudzy Duz It Car Wash and Gary’s Quick Lube businesses in Tecumseh.  After retiring from the direct operations of these businesses, Judy discovered her true calling as a poet and author.  She founded the Destiny House non-profit organization and became a prolific scribe of God inspired “prayoems” that resulted in content for more than 40 books.  Judy’s greatest desire was to share the tangible and intimate love of God with every single person she met, often found striking up conversations in hotel lobbies, restaurants and checkout lines.  She was a kind, generous and gentle spirit who lived life in the fullness of God’s love walking.

Judy’s number one priority in life was praying for and caring for her family and she especially valued her one-on-one time at home with her granddaughter Brianna.  Watching her grow and mature into a phenomenal dancer was one of Judy’s greatest joys.  She and Gary loved to watch Brianna, as well as the entire Haja Dance family, perform and regularly attended national-level competitions to show their support.  Her passing was preceded by her parents, Duane and Virginia Shoemaker; her brother, William Shoemaker; and many aunts and uncles.

Private services for Judy are being planned for a later date.   Arrangements have been entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service and cremation will follow through Covenant Cremation of Erie.
