Rosemary Cousino

Obituary of Rosemary Catherine Cousino

Please share a memory of Rosemary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rosemary Catherine Cousino was born on October 26, 1928 in Monroe, Michigan.   She was one of seven children born from the union of Ajay and Josephine (Liedel) Cousino. She would attend and graduate from St. Mary’s Academy in Monroe.

Rosemary would gain employment as a secretary for several years before attending the police academy.   She was quite proud to be hired as the first female police officer for the Monroe County Sherriff Department.   A slight and wiry woman, she chose to use her authority to encourage others, often sharing compassion and empathy for those troubled people, whose paths she crossed. Rosemary offered counsel to encourage these individuals to not let this one offense define them as a person and that their actions could be corrected so they could have a great and honest future.

Rosemary could often be seen planting a garden on her property. This task typically required thirty to forty flats of flowers to complete; a chore Rosemary completed happily each year.  As a young girl, who appreciated crafting, Rosemary enjoyed partaking in ceramics and even dabbled in painting.  She often listened to the radio to the music of her favorite singers: Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. On occasion, these artists would perform at the Luna Pier pavilion where Rosemary could happily listen in person.

In recent years, Rosemary was known to be a “stick picker-upper” no matter the weather, or time, she would walk her around her two and half acre property and collect sticks.
