Obituary of Tonya Rene Coleman

Please share a memory of Tonya to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Tonya Rene Coleman was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 22, 1967.   She was the only daughter born from the union of James Coleman and Christine (Holden) Coleman.   Tonya would be raised with several other foster children several of whom would become her siblings through adoption.   She grew up and was educated in Southeast Michigan receiving her high school diploma from Highland Park High School.   She later would earn her Associates Degree.

Tonya was well-known for her attention to detail, to the point of maybe being a little OCD.   She kept a very tidy, meticulous home and it was said that the guests could eat off the floor.   Her devotion extended to her yard, and she was happy to talk about her well-manicured garden and flowers 24/7.   Tonya seemed to have her own way of doing everything and an opinion on how those around her should accomplish tasks as well.   Although, she often had a “my way or the highway” attitude, her charm and love for those around her always showed through.   Her grandbabies were her pride and joy, the light of her life, and she would do anything for them.

Tonya loved her some Jesus and valued regular worship and church attendance.   For many years she had been active at the North Monroe Street Church of God.

Tonya Rene Coleman, age 54, of Gibraltar passed away on Wednesday; August 4, 2021 at the Cleveland Clinic where she had been since June 22.   Her passing was preceded by her mother in 2009.

To cherish her memory she leaves three children:  Porchia Coleman of Gibraltar, Amber (Codie) Balcom of Gibraltar, and Cody Coleman of Trenton; her father James Coleman; one sister:  Zandra Coleman of Toledo; two brothers:  Stephen Coleman of Toledo and Christopher Coleman of Mesa, Arizona; four beloved grandchildren:  Adrian, Selena, Layla, Zayn Balcom; and a host of aunts and cousins.

Friends may gather from 11:00am until 12:00pm on Tuesday; August 17, 2021 at the North Monroe Street Church of God, Mountain Assembly; 2393 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185.   A Homegoing Service will follow at 12:00pm with Reverend Rick Massingill pastor of the church officiating.   Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for burial.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family to assist with funeral arrangements.   Online guests may leave words of inspiration and comfort, share a photo, or make a donation at CROWDFUNDING by visiting www.merklefs.com.
