Obituary of Lewis Martin Roe Sr.
Lewis Martin Roe, Sr. was born June 30, 1943 in Wyandotte, Michigan. He was one of five children born from the union of George Roe, Sr. and Juanita (Williams) Roe. After graduating with Dundee High School Class of 1962, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Joan Andries on September 14, 1963 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dundee, Michigan. They would be blessed with two children. Lewis provided for his household by working as an excavating engineer at his business, Lewis Roe Excavating.
Lewis would never miss an opportunity to cast his fishing pole in the lake. Mowing the lawn was not a chore to him, as he enjoyed this task very much. Lewis would tend to his garden daily to guarantee a bountiful crop of vegetables for canning. He could often be found “puttering” around in his shop. A self proclaimed handyman, he could fix anything. However, sometimes his skills weren’t needed and, inexplicably, a simple touch would do the trick! A truly kind and generous person, Lewis would not hesitate to help anyone who needed assistance. Although he always proclaimed that he “hates cats”, he even opened his heart to a stray cat that had wandered in. From that day forward, his new feline friend “Dixie” followed him everywhere.
Lewis Martin Roe, Sr., passed away suddenly, at his home on Tuesday November 3, 2020. He is preceded by his parents; brother: George Roe, Jr.; and brother in-law: Jimmie Cumby.
To cherish his memory, he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan; son: Lewis (Kelly) Roe Jr.; daughter: Denise Roe; two sisters: Kathleen Cumby and Lynn (Jim) Irby; brother: Martin (Ruth) Roe; three grandchildren: Michael (Betzi) Roe, David (Brandi) Roe, and Darrian Campbell; and five great-grandchildren: Liem, Carson, Clayton, Lauren, and Aayla.
Family and friends may gather from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday November 8, 2020 at Merkle Funeral Service, Dundee; 297 Tecumseh Street, Dundee, Michigan 48131 (734) 529-3156. A service celebrating his life will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, November 9, 2020 also at Merkle’s. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and Michigan State mandates, guests will be limited in number, face coverings will be required for entry to the facilities and no food or beverages will be allowed inside the building.
