James V. “Birdie” Burchette, a familiar face among the Monroe business community for decades passed away peacefully, at the age of 89, on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Medilodge of Monroe where he had resided since December. Birdie was blessed to be surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky on August 28, 1930, James was one of three children from the union of Joseph P. Burchette and Dora Ethal (Clarkson) Burchette. The family moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1942 and at the age of 12, Birdie, took a job as a typeset. He was furnished a bicycle and was paid to run back and forth between printers. The family would then make their way to Monroe in 1943. Birdie, at the age of fourteen, would begin his sixty-three year career in the oil industry at Third and Monroe, pumping gas for the Marathon gas station. Following his graduation from Monroe High School with the Class of 1948, Birdie would continue his employment with the Monroe Oil Co-operative eventually assuming the roles of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. His career continued through mergers and acquisitions working with Gallup-Silkworth running Monroe operations until it was sold to Atlas Oil and then ran operations and serving as Regional Director. Following his retirement from Atlas, he took a position as a consultant for Barron Oil Company working until their sale to Crystal Flash. Birdie would earn the respect of many in his industry and in 2004 was awarded the Pioneer Award from the Michigan Petroleum Association. Birdie proudly served his country during the Korean War from 1951-1953 obtaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. After his discharge from the Army, he would marry the love of his life the former, Hazel A. Vagt, on June 19, 1953 in Angola, Indiana. The couple would be blessed with the birth of four children. From 1963-1974, Birdie was a member of the Frenchtown Township Fire Department. He rose to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief and was one of the first in Monroe County to be trained as an Emergency Medical Technician. Birdie was also active with the Monroe County Firefighter’s Association serving as Vice President from 1967-1968, President in 1969-1970, and Trustee in 1971. James was a man of strong Christian principles and practiced his faith through selfless service to others. He was active at his church, Monroe Missionary Baptist. A lifetime member of the Monroe Veterans of Foreign War Post 1138 and former member of the Fraternal Order of Police, he had also served with Sertoma International. Birdie was very involved in the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce for more than fifty years and served on the Board of Directors from 2003-2008. He was a frequent fixture at chamber events and especially enjoyed attending the annual business expos and steak out. Birdie, relentlessly worked the chamber fair booth for many years and he never ceased to amaze fellow volunteers with his ability to draw in the masses of fair attendees for conversation. He was active with the Monroe County Tourism Bureau from 2004-2010. When Birdie found free time, he enjoyed being with his family. He loved bowling and golfing and was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and the University of Michigan sports. Family often accompanied Birdie to his many community appearances throughout the years. In November of 2019, Birdie received his one final wish, to travel South and visit his Kentucky birthplace. He was escorted by his son: Randy and grandsons: Jon and Jason. To cherish his memory Birdie leaves a beloved wife of sixty-six years: Hazel A. Burchette of Monroe; three children: Rae A. (Timothy) Timiney of Monroe, Sherry L. (John) Elmer of Petersburg, Randall L. (Yvonne) Burchette of Monroe; one brother: Leon (Laura) Burchette of Hudson; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. His passing was preceded by his parents, a son: Rodney; a sister: Bobbie Ruth Carroll; and a great grandson: Alexander Kramer. Due to social distancing restrictions, private services were held at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Roy Southerland officiating. Entombment followed in the Veterans section at Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle. Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185 was entrusted with his arrangements. We realize that we are unable to use pallbearers at this time but we know that our dad would have wanted his grandsons and great grandsons to carry him the final steps. We know how much he loved them and how proud he was of all of them, they are: Jon Kramer, Jason Elmer, and Tyler Burchette, grandsons; Zachary Kramer, Chris and Nate Ahlers, Ashton Elmer, and Chandler and Calloway Gossiaux, great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters: Tracy Ahlers, Amanda Burchette, Jamie Gossiaux, Libby Kramer, and Sophia Elmer. A public reception and military honors will be held in the near future. The Burchette Family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Monroe Visiting Angels, VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Toledo VA Clinic, VA Blind Rehabilitation Services, and to Medilodge of Monroe for their unparalleled care. Memorials are suggested to Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
