Obituary of James Gray Sr

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James Robert Gray was born in Monroe, Michigan on January 15, 1944. He was one of eight children born from the union of the late Charles D. Gray and the late Lola Mae (Eastes) Gray. James attended Monroe Public Schools. For twenty-six years, James slaved away in the paper mills working for Union Camp as a Boiler Operator. As a staunch member of the Union, James showed his support by serving as the Steward for many years. Unfortunately, due to declining health he was forced to take a medical retirement in 1995. James was a sports enthusiast. As a young man he enjoyed playing baseball, but as he aged he was able to get his sports fix cheering on his Detroit Tigers and Red Wings from the stands or from the comfort of his own couch. James loved the Classics. Whether it was an old television show, a movie, or even an automobile he cherished the opportunity to reminisce. Of all his favorites, James loved the 1957 Chevy. James had the privilege to raise his grandchildren as his own. By far, his favorite activity was "anything" with his grandchildren. He enjoyed just spending time with them and hanging out. He often could be found going about his routine with his trusty, canine companion, Weez, by his side. James Gray Sr., age 72 of Monroe, passed away in his home at 5:28pm on Sunday, February 7, 2016. In addition to his parents, his passing was preceded by a son: James R. Gray Jr.; and four brothers: Ray, Charles, Clyde, and Roger Lee Gray. To cherish his memory, James leaves three daughters: Kimberly A. Gray, Kathy S. (Mike) Bussell, and Kelly S. Gray all of Monroe; two sisters: JoAnn (James) Casell and Mary (David) Hayter both of Monroe; a brother: William Gray; twelve grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 7:00pm on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Merkle Funeral Service; 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of His Life will take place at 10:00am on Friday, February 12, 2016, also at Merkle's with Pastor Roy Southerland of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Procession will follow to Woodland Cemetery for burial. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to the Gray family.
